I was looking at the microwave in our apartment last week and realized there were some weird settings for what looks like a regular microwave to me. Upon further inspection and some Googling, we determined that our microwave also acts as a convection oven and has a grill (broil) feature. So the kids and I thought we would attempt to make a cake in preparation for L's birthday next week. If it didn't work, we'd come up with plan B.
First buy Pyrex dish. Then set microwave to preheat on convection setting (measurements are in Celsius), sounds weird right! Mix cake mix. Pour in dish, put in "oven" and hope it cooks!

The microwave/convection oven. |
Then the debate, do we leave the microwave rotating plate in there while cooking in convection mode? Don't know, we can't find or download the user manual, so we leave it in for a bit, then take it out.
Normally convection ovens take less time than the recipe calls for, this took a little longer. The outsides of the cake cooked quickly, but the middle was still liquid when I guessed it would be done. But it took about 44 minutes to cook. It was yummy. We did this today, its gone already.

When it first came out (lots of hole in the middle as I kept having to check if it was done) |

Once we determined it was done in the middle, well we (L and I) ate a bit of it. No one said it had to look pretty! |
